So I found this Land plot map on Rexburg's site and saw the Klingler addition in green in the middle. I remembered a story told long ago by Dad. I called him and he related the story to me again.
Apparently Alma Klingler's father, Frederick Ludwig Klingler, was working on the railroad through town and overheard a co-worker talking to one of his friends. He said that he found out that this plot of land had not yet been claimed and that at the end of work he was going to climb on his horse and ride to the land office in Blackfoot or Pocatello, not sure which. He was going to claim the land and come back and kick all the Mormons off of it. Of course, Great Grandpa Klingler would not have this. Being friends with the forman, after work he borrowed a train engine and disconnected all but the tinder car and raced to the land office. He obviously arrived before his co-worker and claimed the land himself. He then came back and gave it to the people who lived on the land. The old Klingler homestead is also on this property.
If you have any other details or corrections please let me know. If you have other stories please add them. Thanks.
